A Legacy Built Over Time

Tracing our roots and the foundation of excellence.

Sultan Mahmud Degree College, located in Senbagh upazila of Noakhali, is a prominent educational institution established in 1994. Named after its founder, Professor Sultan Mahmud Chowdhury, a former principal of Dhaka College, the college was created to provide higher education to underserved rural students. Affiliated with the Comilla Board and the National University of Bangladesh, it offers Higher Secondary and Degree (Pass) programs in Arts, Commerce, and Science streams. Set on a scenic 3.59-acre campus in Baliakandi village, the college features classrooms, labs, a library, and a playground. Over three decades, it has produced countless graduates contributing to various sectors. Despite leadership transitions and challenges, the institution remains dedicated to academic excellence and community service in Noakhali.

Introduction

The college began its journey on January 5, 1994, under the leadership of Professor Sultan Mahmud Chowdhury. He personally donated land and resources to build the institution in his hometown of Bijbagh Union, Senbagh. Initially, the college offered Higher Secondary programs in Arts, Science, and Commerce. By 1999, it earned affiliation with the National University and began offering Bachelor’s (Pass) degrees. After the founder’s passing in the late 1990s, the college went through leadership gaps until regular principals were appointed. Though it faced administrative issues, including controversies during Principal Md. Shahidul Alam’s two-decade tenure, the college persisted. It remained a beacon for local students, helping them pursue quality education close to home with accessible facilities and affordable tuition.

Early Beginnings

Celebrating 30 years in 2025, the college entered a new chapter under Principal A.K.M. Abul Kashem, signaling reform and renewed focus on transparency. Alumni like Barrister Rafiul Chowdhury and Monir Ahmed Monir reflect the institution’s legacy of success. Going forward, Sultan Mahmud Degree College aims to enhance its academic reputation by expanding its course offerings, improving infrastructure, and strengthening governance. Its role as a community pillar remains strong, providing education and opportunity in rural Noakhali. The college’s alumni network continues to grow, offering mentorship and resources. With a new vision and leadership, the college is committed to producing socially responsible graduates and sustaining the founder’s dream of empowering local lives through education.
